Irish Veterans Medal of Honor exhibition - awarded "Highly Commended Best New Business" By

On Saturday 10 March 2018 Irish Veterans opened a small Exhibition in Kinsale at The Glen, Kinsale, Co. Cork.

The display is centred around the Medal of Honor received by Michael Gibbons, born and raised in Co Mayo. He emigrated, joined the US Navy and was decorated for heroism under fire off the coast of Cuba during the Spanish-American War of 1898. The Medal of Honor is the highest military honour the United States can bestow and Irish have been among the most notable of recipients.

The 13 panels designed for the exhibition, covering the history and the social impact of military service for the Irish in the US military, were created as a collaboration project with Hannah Sims, illustrator. The design was heavily text led, and source material as well as guidance on appropriate themes was developed in close collaboration with the Museum Curator Damian Shiels (irishintheamericancivilwar.com).

In the design brief it was requested to keep the design clean and simple. While every panel have their own unique identity based on the era or location they cover, certain elements were kept consistent throughout the project to tie everything together. 13 panels and a booklet were produced and are available to view at The Irish Veterans Museum, The Glen, Sleveen, Kinsale, Co. Cork, P17 YX24.

The exhibition was awarded "Highly Commended Best New Business" by Kinsale Tidy Towns on November 2018 and is well worth a visit if you are visiting Kinsale.
